Life in the Studio

 Welcome to the Studio ...

An image of one of the workstations at TechnoMage

... A mixture of the old and new, where the computer systems, stuffed full of sequencers, soft synths, plug-ins, editors and interfaces, sit happily alongside analogue sound modules, outboard equipment, modular synthesisers and many experimental devices, including several versions of the Little Infinite Frequency Expander.

... On this page, you will find more information about some of the experimental devices and other equipment in use, here at the TechnoMage studio.

» Modified DR-110
This modified version of the DR-110 Dr. Rhythm (one of Roland's early drum machines) now outputs 6 trigger signals (one from each of the onboard sounds [5] plus 1 from the 'Accent') at +9V for triggering anything compatible. The unit is also modified to transmit or receive sync 24 or any external clock source. Individual on-board sounds can be muted. It still retains all of its original capabilities. (return to top)

» TechnoMage Interface
With the advent of MIDI and computer control, a way was sought to make sure that all of the older 'non-MIDIed' kit here at TechnoMage remained compatible. This module (based on a 'butchered' Prologue Plus from 'The Design Labs') is one of those (still) used at TechnoMage (along with the Doepfer A-190 module and an EES MIDI-CV7) to control non-MIDI modules and other equipment. » Modified A-110
A useful visual feedback device consisting of a modified Roland A-110 (MIDI Display) combined with a custom MIDI analyser, which shows details of various MIDI parameters. (return to top)

» TechnoMage Guitar
The body is solid mahogany and the neck rescued from a Fender Stratocaster. The hardware is mostly Schaller. It has 2 dual and 1 single pickup along with a built-in Roland GK-2 divided PUP. The pick-ups are custom wired (in/out phase, series/parallel) through a collection of rotary and toggle switches. The guitar also contains customised electronics, designed by TechnoMage. « Other Tools of the Studio
Lots of standard modules. We like using the the Roland JV1080. Although still used, the samplers tasks are being replaced by software. The Doepfer modular is extensively used for design, both in the 'conceptualising' of hardware and for constructing sounds. There are many custom (TechnoMage) devices integrated into, and used in the studio. We enjoy designing and trying out different types of 'human interface' devices, controllers and the like. Creating a more ‘organic’ experience during studio sessions. (return to top)

» TechnoMage Combo Amp
This hand built combo amp is powered by an old (built in) HH 120 watt power amp, driving 4 x 8 inch speakers and 1 x piezo HF unit. It has a sloping 5u racking unit built in which allows modules to be swapped, enabling the amp to be used in many applications. (return to top)

« Roland HPD-15 Handsonic
A wonderfully expressive instrument (as far as electronics go). As well as sounding good, it's also fun to play. You really need the correct stand to enjoy this instrument. (return to top)

« BOSS Dr.PAD
Available in 3 versions (DRP-I/II/III) each with a different sound set.
DRP-I Snare 1, Snare 2, Tambourine, Hand Clap, Cymbal and Timpani.
DRP-II Bass 1, Bass 2, Tom, Steel Drum, Gong-S and Star Chime.
DRP-III Glass, Cowbell, Timbale, Scratch, Quijada and Gong-L.

» Latronic Notron
A hardware sequencer produced in 1997. Featured in the same edition of Future Music as LIFE 1. Here at TechnoMage we have a Mk.1 Notron, but with a difference, our Mk.1 has been upgraded with Mk.2 firmware making it quite unique! If you would like to know more about the Notron, we have created this page - [Information about the Latronic Notron] - clicking on this link, or on the image » of the Latronic Notron will take you there.  (return to top)

« Pearl Syncussion SY-1
A very interesting (and much sought after I'm told) dual channel drum synth. Comes in its own carry case (with its psu) along with two drum pads (none of your ABS plastic here, real drum pads) and two chromed stands (one for the SY-1 and one for the pads). The SY-1 can also be triggered with pulses fed via the inputs on the rear panel of the unit. (return to top)

« Klone Dual Percussion Synthesizer
The Klone Dual Percussion Synthesizer was produced in the UK by Honkey-Tonk Music back in the early eighties "a versatile and comprehensive percussion system, featuring two separate monophonic synthesizers, specially designed for percussive sound generation" ..so said the advertisements. There were a flurry of this kind of synth in the early eighties, along with the Pearl Syncussion SY-1, the Klone is one of the best around for its versatility and sound generating capabilities. You don't have to use pads with the Klone, as thoughtfully, the designers (Dick Straker?) included trigger inputs on the rear panel of the 'brain' (along with separate/mix outputs and a headphone socket). Honky-Tonk also produced The Klone Kit, Klone-Kit 2 and the Multi Klone.  (return to top)
